The teen who was shot by police in downtown Salt Lake City on Feb. 27 continues to recover and has begun speaking.

Abdullahi Omar Mohamed, 17, had been writing notes to family members, cousin Muslima Aden told The Tribune, but as of Thursday was able to speak.

Aden posted a video to her Facebook page on Friday showing her and others, including Mohamed's mother, visiting the 17-year-old.

In the video Aden says he was shot four times, and also posted that his heart and other internal organs avoided being struck by mere inches.

Law enforcement has shared few details about the shooting, which took place near 250 S. Rio Grande St. (440 West), near a homeless shelter and The Gateway mall.

The Salt Lake City Police Department has said its officers, while responding to another call, saw two people with metal objects attacking a male victim.

"Officers confronted the two suspects and ordered them to drop the weapons," police wrote in a statement released last week. "One of the males complied and dropped the weapon, the other continued to advance on the victim and was shot by officers."

Two officers are on leave from the department pending an investigation into the shooting, which is being handled by the Unified Police Department.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill has said the footage from body cameras worn by the officers that night will not be publicly released at this time, as it could complicate several investigations connected to the shooting.
